Wayland Softball

The overall objective of the Wayland Softball Program is to provide a quality experience, where players learn how to play the game in an environment free from physical and emotional harm. It is divided into four groups depending upon the player's grade.

Rookie Softball (Grades K-1st Grade)

Rookie Softball is an instructional program for girls in grades K and 1.  No previous experience with softball or baseball is necessary and in fact introduce many young players, to playing softball

Our mission is to introduce Wayland girls to softball in a fun and engaging program while focusing on a progression of skill development, which is why our program was developed through a collaboration between WBSA and Frozen Ropes, the Metrowest’s preeminent organization specializing in youth softball and baseball skill development.

The program incorporates a combination of fast paced and fun drills using varied stations.

Drills are lead by professional Frozen Ropes instructors with assistance from parent coaches and volunteers from Middle and High School Programs. In addition to the drills, we will play controlled scrimmages to allow the girls to apply these skills in a game situation. The girls will work in small groups organized by experience level and enjoy an engaging and rapidly changing environment.

Rookie Softball is be organized as so to avoid any conflicts with other sporting activities. For instance we understand that many players who play in this league also play Spring soccer.

As practices and games for soccer take place on Saturday, we hold Softball practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30PM to 7:00PM beginning after school break and running through middle of June.

Grapefruit Softball (Grade 2-3)

Grapefruit Softball is an instructional program for girls in grades 2 and 3.  No previous experience with softball or baseball is necessary. Our softball program was developed as a progressive program to transition from Rookie softball through a collaboration of the WBSA and Frozen Ropes, the Metrowest’s preeminent organization specializing in youth softball and baseball skill development.  Our mission is to introduce Wayland girls to softball in a fun and engaging program while focusing on a progression of skill development.

Grapefruit Softball will combine fast paced and fun drills using varied stations. Drills will be lead by professional Frozen Ropes instructors with assistance from parent coaches and volunteers.   For the first half of the season, in addition to the drills, we will play controlled scrimmages to allow the girls to apply these skills in a game situation.  For the second half of the season we begin the transition into competitive softball by having full instructional softball games both in Wayland and finishing with a tournament style weekend against teams in Weston and Wellesley

Grapefruit Softball is played on Tuesdays from 5:30-7:00pm (and 6pm-7:30pm as light allows) and Saturdays from 3PM to 5PM at Wayland Middle School. Many players also often play an additional sport in the spring. We coordinate our practice day so not to conflict with 3rd grade soccer.

There is a tournament in June which will require travel to very nearby Weston or Wellesley softball field.

The Grapefruit league begins the week after the April school break.

Junior Softball (Grade 4-5)

The Junior Softball league is for Wayland girls in grades 4 and 5. Previous experience with Softball or Baseball is not required.

The mission of Junior Softball is to foster girls’ interest and passion for softball with a fun and engaging program focused on skill development.  We will focus on team building and sportsmanship in our competitive games.  We will develop players with skills and game experience that will make them strong players in the Senior League.

In Junior Softball, we teach the fundamentals and basic skills of softball, but we also play games in a league with Wellesley and Weston. There are practices, instructional scrimmages and live competitive games, usually held two evenings a week at 5:30 PM with occasional games on Saturdays. There are also opportunities for additional small group clinics and optional team practices on select weekends.

Junior Softball games require arrival in Wayland (or Wellesley or Weston for away games) at 5:30pm  and can be played Tuesdays, Thursdays and the occasional Saturday. Weekday practices start at 5:30pm early in the season and 6pm as light allows. Most games are held at the Wayland Middle School or High School field with an occasional away game in nearby Weston or Wellesley. There is also an exciting single elimination round of playoffs at the end of the year. All teams make the playoffs.

The goal will be to start the season as close to the start of April as possible.  Games start after school break by the end of April.

We have enhanced the softball program this year.  We believe the changes we have made will provide more role models for the girls, more social interactions for the teams, and more exposure to opportunities in competitive softball in future years.

Senior Softball (Grade 6-8)

The Senior Softball league is for Wayland girls in grades 6-8. This league is competitive as well as developmental. While previous experience with softball or baseball is not required, many players will have played at some level before.  HOWEVER, PLAYERS HAVE ENTERED AT THIS LEAGUE AND GONE ON TO SCHOLASTIC SOFTBALL.  This is a balanced league without tryouts.  Subject to team sizes, all who sign up with be included on a first come first served basis.

The mission of the Senior Softball program is to invest and foster girls’ interest and passion for softball with a fun and engaging program.  The program will have a competitive spirit and will focus on advanced skills and strategies that would help a player progress into the middle and high school athletic programs if she would desire to do so.

Senior Softball will have practices, instructional scrimmages and games on weekday evenings (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6PM), as well as one or two games on the weekend (games are schedule in afternoon to minimize conflicts with other sports).  Home games and practices will be played at the Wayland Middle and High School softball fields.  Our league plays games in a league with Wellesley and Weston and away games are held at their softball fields.   We also participate in an exciting single elimination round of playoffs at the end of the year. All teams make the playoffs.

We work very hard with the Middle School Softball Program to avoid conflicts with games.  in the past, players have been able to be full contributors to both their Middle School and WBSA teams.
