Wayland Baseball and Softball Programs

Throughout the year you will find baseball and softball being played in Wayland. Our goal is to provide baseball and softball programs year round that includes a wide variety of activities involving various levels of competition that will insure that every child has a rewarding experience, while enhancing their baseball and softball skills.

Wayland Little League strives to provide a positive competitive environment with emphasis on teaching the fundamentals of the game. Sportsmanship, teamwork, safety and lots of fun are the main aims of all of our programs and are stressed throughout each practice session, game and other events.

Baseball



Our popular baseball programs provides the boys and girls of Wayland various learning opportunities, competitions, leagues and other events. Our programs are open to all Wayland resident boys and girls in grades Kindergarten through 9th grade and all levels are open to new and experienced players alike.

Baseball Leagues and programs run year round, so there is always something going on at Wayland baseball for those players who want keep playing and practicing their skills.
Players can sign up for a number of events including:

  • Spring Leagues
  • Summer Leagues
  • Fall Ball Leagues
  • Winter Baseball Clinics.


The baseball program a progressive one and is designed to introduce our youngest players in Kindergarten to the sport of baseball. As players progress through the program,  the program introduces new new aspects of the game and elements which look to build on previous experience and introduce challenges.

The program is split into age appropriate groups consisting of:

  • Instructional - Grades K-1
  • AAA - Instructional - Grade 2
  • Minor League - Grades 3-4
  • Major League - Grade 4-6
  • Babe Ruth League - Grades 7-9

The Kindergarten through 2nd Grade program has been designed and run specifically for Wayland Baseball by the professionals at Frozen Ropes. The focus is on introducing the fundamentals of the game and introducing fun game play using their newly found skills. Game play is introduced and sessions are run by parent coaches in conjunction with Frozen Ropes staff.

As players progress into 3 and 4th grade, town inter-team league play is introduced with the Walyand minor league program. The minor league adds a new dimension of game and team play, with regularly scheduled games throughout the spring season. Players in the minor league have the opportunity to play in a "American league vs National League" All Star game. This is  popular event, and is a fun night for all players, friends and family to enjoy

Players in the 5th and 6th grade play in the major league, which continues to build on previous experience and continue teach baseball in a competitive game environment with a focus on developing our kids into good all round athletes and sportsman.

Players in the major league have the opportunity to play in a "American league vs National League" All Star game. In addition major league players have the opportunity to participate in a home run derby "slug-fest" prior to the all star game. This is an ever popular event, and we welcome all players, friends and family to come and enjoy the events. 

The major league introduces inter town play to add an extra dimension of competition. Wayland major league teams play games on Friday nights against the Weston Little League teams. The Wayland major league champions will play the Weston Major league champions for a cross-town title.


Our older "senior" players join a Wayland team that plays in the Babe Ruth Minuteman league. The Minuteman Babe Ruth leagues is a league made up of players from Grades, 7th, 8th and 9th graders providing more competitive experience for players and involves inter-town play.

Softball

Our softball program caters for Wayland girls beginning with Kindergarten and running through to eighth grade. We organize our softball teams into age appropriate groups for the purpose of practices and competitive games. The groups are grade based, so friends can play together and similar skill levels play in a competitive environment.

The softball program is split into age appropriate groups consisting of:

  • Rookie Softball Grades K-1
  • Grapefruit League Softball Grades 2-3
  • Junior League Softball Grade 4-5
  • Senior Softball Grade 6-8

Our K through first grade Rookie Softball program has been designed and run specifically for Wayland Baseball by the professionals at Frozen Ropes. Rookie Softball is an instructional program and no previous experience with softball or baseball is necessary. Our mission is to introduce Wayland girls to softball in a fun and engaging program while focusing on a progression of skill development, which is why our program was developed through a collaboration between Wayland Little League and Frozen Ropes, metrowest’s preeminent organization specializing in youth softball and baseball skill development.

The program incorporates a combination of fast paced and fun drills using varied stations. Drills are lead by professional Frozen Ropes instructors with assistance from parent coaches and volunteers from Middle and High School Programs. In addition to the drills, we will play controlled scrimmages to allow the girls to apply these skills in a game situation. The girls will work in small groups organized by experience level and enjoy an engaging and rapidly changing environment. 
 

Grapefruit Softball is an instructional program for girls in grades 2 and 3.  No previous experience with softball or baseball is necessary. Our softball program was developed as a progressive program to transition from Rookie softball through a collaboration of the Wayland Little League and Frozen Ropes, the Metrowest’s preeminent organization specializing in youth softball and baseball skill development.  Our mission is to introduce Wayland girls to softball in a fun and engaging program while focusing on a progression of skill development. The program combines fast paced and fun drills using varied stations.

For the first half of the season, in addition to the drills, we will play controlled scrimmages to allow the girls to apply these skills in a game situation. For the second half of the season we begin the transition into competitive softball by having full instructional softball games both in Wayland and finishing with a tournament style weekend against teams in Weston and Wellesley 
 

The Junior Softball league is for Wayland girls in grades 4 and 5. Previous experience with softball or baseball is not required.

The mission of Junior Softball is to foster girls’ interest and passion for softball with a fun and engaging program focused on skill development. We focus on team building and sportsmanship in our competitive games.  We will develop players with skills and game experience that will make them strong players in the Senior League. As well as teaching the fundamentals and basic skills of softball, we also play games in a league with Wellesley and Weston. There are practices, instructional scrimmages and live competitive games, usually held two evenings a week at 5:30 PM with occasional games on Saturdays. There are also opportunities for additional small group clinics and optional team practices on select weekends.  
 

The Senior Softball league is for Wayland girls in grades 6-8. This league is competitive as well as developmental. While previous experience with softball or baseball is not required, many players will have played at some level before. HOWEVER, PLAYERS HAVE ENTERED AT THIS LEAGUE AND GONE ON TO SCHOLASTIC SOFTBALL. This is a balanced league without tryouts.  Subject to team sizes, all who sign up with be included on a first come first served basis.
 
The mission of the Senior Softball program is to invest and foster girls’ interest and passion for softball with a fun and engaging program. The program will have a competitive spirit and will focus on advanced skills and strategies that would help a player progress into the middle and high school athletic programs if she would desire to do so.
